Apple’s forthcoming iOS 18 software update is poised to be a landmark moment for the tech giant, potentially marking one of the most significant updates in the history of iOS, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The highly anticipated iOS 18 is anticipated to be unveiled at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.
In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman stated, “I’m told that the new operating system is seen within the company as one of the biggest iOS updates—if not the biggest—in the company’s history.” This assertion hints at the excitement building within Apple ahead of the June event.
This revelation comes on the heels of Gurman’s previous report, where he indicated that Apple was aiming for iOS 18 to be its most “ambitious and compelling” update in years.
While specific details about iOS 18 remain undisclosed, previous reports from Gurman suggest that Apple is planning to introduce a revamped version of Siri that harnesses a new AI system. Additionally, enhancements to Siri and the Messages app are anticipated to improve auto-completion of sentences and responses to queries. Moreover, Apple Music is expected to receive auto-generated playlists, a feature akin to what Spotify introduced last year.
Apple is also exploring the integration of generative AI into development tools like Xcode, enabling developers to create new applications more efficiently. Furthermore, productivity apps such as Pages and Keynote are slated to receive updates leveraging generative AI capabilities.
One significant addition to iOS 18 could be the support for RCS (Rich Communication Services), a standard that Apple announced its intention to adopt in November. RCS is expected to offer enhanced interoperability compared to traditional SMS or MMS messaging. Despite this move, Apple has confirmed that messages sent from Android devices to iPhones will still be displayed in green bubbles.
As we await the official unveiling of iOS 18, scheduled for June, anticipation is high for further insights into this groundbreaking software update in the coming months.
