“COVID-19 Sub-Variant JN.1: Mumbai Detects 15 New Cases; Officials Highlight Mild Symptoms”

As many as 15 new cases of the COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been identified in Mumbai, according to city civic officials. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that during whole genome sequencing (WGS), 19 swab samples tested positive for the JN.1 sub-variant, with 15 cases detected in Mumbai. The patients, exhibiting mild symptoms, have recovered, while the World Health Organization classifies JN.1 as a “variant of interest” (VoI) with a “low” global public health risk.

    • Mumbai has detected 15 new cases of the COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 this week, bringing attention to the emergence of this variant in the city.
    • The detection was made through whole genome sequencing (WGS) of swab samples, with 19 samples testing positive for the JN.1 sub-variant.

    • The 15 patients in Mumbai with the JN.1 sub-variant exhibited mild symptoms, and four of them had comorbidities, leading to hospital admission.
    • All patients, comprising nine men and six women, have reportedly recovered, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
  3. World Health Organization Classification:

    • The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the JN.1 sub-variant as a “variant of interest” (VoI), acknowledging its rapid spread but deeming it to pose a “low” global public health risk.
  4. Statewide Situation in Maharashtra:

    • Maharashtra, the state in which Mumbai is located, reported 81 fresh COVID-19 cases and one fatality. The state’s tally of patients infected with the JN.1 sub-variant has reached 451.
    • Pune leads the state with 189 cases of the JN.1 sub-variant, followed by Thane (89) and Mumbai (37), among other regions.
  5. Recovery Rate and Testing Data:

    • Maharashtra reported a recovery rate of 98.18%, with 97 people discharged on the reported day.
    • A total of 12,269 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, with a positivity rate of 0.66%, including RT-PCR and Rapid Antigen Tests.

 The detection of 15 new cases of the COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 in Mumbai raises awareness of the ongoing evolution of the virus.
